This book is 100 percent narrated by the dog.  I love dogs and this is well done.  It’s lighthearted.  Dogs are naturally happy, curious and loyal.  That really comes through in narration.  However we don’t get the full story and it’s a little… SQUIRREL!

I wasn’t planning on continuing the series right now but nothing on my library shelf was doing it for me.  So time for book two.

Book two follows the same pattern in the investigation as the first.  Chet (the dog) goes off on an adventure and probably knows more than Bernie (his human).  There are repetitive almost catch phrases the dog thinks.  I like it. I can see myself starting to say them.  I liked this book more than the first.  Could just be that I understand the setup of the series better.  Again I tried starting other books on my library shelf.  Again, they just weren’t catching my interest.  I’m now listening to book 3.

These books read like a cozy mystery.  While bad things do happen, with a dog as a narrator the books can’t help but be lighthearted and fun.

To Fetch a Thief (book 3)

I got distracted while listening to this one and didn’t go back to figure out all the details.  The problem is, I know the cute dog thoughts are mostly not necessary for the mystery plot. I pay less attention and get distracted (kind of like Chet).   Then I don’t catch it when the plot details come back in.

Chet (the dog) still goes on an adventure by himself like the first two books.  This time it’s closer to the end of the book. Chet’s good at making new friends 🙂

Off Topic # 1

We find toys left by our mailbox and it’s a bit of a mystery.  We leave them out there thinking a child dropped them on a walk.  However we now think it’s a dog leaving their toys there.  It makes me think of Chet’s friend Iggy in the books.

Off Topic # 2

In book one Chet finds himself in a kill shelter where there is bad smelling smoke at night.  The other night a neighbor had called the fire department for an odd smell.  They came to check it out but think the smell was coming from a crematorium nearby. Made me think of Chet in his predicament.
